Home at Last! (Email from Dad)

Eileen and Margaret
Eileen and Margaret

Many of you have probably heard that the twins arrived about two weeks ago.  I'm sorry that this email is a little late, but it's been a whirlwind few weeks.  Attached are a few pictures and below I put together a brief story of their birth and some more info on Margaret and Eileen - in the pics Eileen is on the left and Margaret is on the right.  We're really excited about having the girls home and are having a great time getting to know the two of them.  Katie and I are both doing great and will try to start getting invites out to people to come and meet them.  Anyways, thanks for all of your thoughts and we can't wait for you all to meet them soon!  Best - Rob

Katie was induced at 10 am on Friday the 11th and at 8 pm she started to push.  Eileen was born a few hours later at 10:42 and Margaret was born at 11:09, but it wasn't quite that easy.  Eileen came out and had a tough time breathing, as it turned out that her lungs weren't fully formed.  She got hooked up to a breathing tube immediately and had to go up to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.  Margaret was born with her cord wrapped around her neck and didn't breathe right away either.  It was a scary half hour.  When it was all said and done, Eileen was born at 6 lbs 12 oz and was 21 inches long.  Margaret was born at 5 lbs 14 oz and was 17 inches long.  Eileen stayed in the NICU for another three days until she was able to breathe on her own and regulate her own temperature.  We were able to take Margaret home on Valentine's Day, but Eileen spent the next 10 days in the step down nursery (Infant Special Care Unit) learning how to take her feedings out of a bottle and making sure that she was gaining enough weight to be able to go home.  We spent a lot of guilty days and nights running back and forth from the hospital to the house trying to spend as much time with both Margaret and Eileen as possible.  Finally on Wednesday the 23rd we were able to take Eileen home and on Friday the girls went in for their two week doctor's appointment.  Eileen was back up to her birth weight and was an inch shorter than when she was born (???) and Margaret was 5 ounces heavier and two inches taller than when she was born (???).  They both have been eating great and getting lots of sleep, unfortunately most of it during the day.  They're still mostly nocturnal, but we're learning some new tricks to get them to sleep at least two or three hours in a row at night so we can try to get some shut eye ourselves.  Some fun facts.  They both kicked a lot in utero when we listened to the radio and they're tastes haven't changed, Eileen stops crying when jazz or classical music is on and Margaret loves hip hop.  So far the motown station seems to be the only good compromise.  Margaret is really strong for a new born and is already trying to scoot around the living room floor, she also eats every meal like her mom (it's a race to see who finishes first!).  Eileen makes really funny faces and is a slow eater like her dad.  They both like being read to and Calvin and Hobbes, Richard Scarry, and Greek mythology (???) are their early favorites.  You can tell that this is a proud dad email in that I've now gone on for too long.  The last thing I'll say is that since they were born a month early the doctor's don't want them to go anywhere or really have any visitors until they're a month past their original due date.  So we're waiting until April or so until they're really healthy enough to have a lot of visitors.  Thanks again for all the great emails, texts, and thoughts.  Hope you're all doing great.

XOXO Rob, Katie, Eileen, and Margaret
